The Latino Farmers Cooperative Accomplishments in 2008
- LFCL served over 100 members and neighbors and gave out 6,000 lbs of food thanks to its partnership with the New Orleans Mission, local rural farmers and other food-related businesses.
- LFCL attracted, recruited and managed over 150 volunteers since 2008
- LFCL grew 800 Lbs of fruit and vegetables valued at $1,500.00 at 100 x 100 vacant lot located in Central City neighborhood which is now a community garden.
- LFCL welcomed over 200 visitors at the O.C. Haley Community Garden including elected officials, community leaders, foundations, local and national journalists as well as planners and researchers.
- LFCL participated 58 times at over 8 outdoor farmers markets located in St Charles Parish, Jefferson Parish, Orleans Parish and Saint Tammany Parish establishing a solid community-based distribution network.
- LFCL hosted 5 familiarization rural farm tours in Louisiana and participated at three conferences.
- LFCL hosted cheese-making workshops to over 60 consumers as part of the Farmers Incubator Project as well as have provided over 100 referrals about raw milk sources and updates about the Cow/goat Share Club.
- LFCL distributed over 1000 handouts on community food issues as well as traditional diets designed to inform, inspire and take action, and to connect people with other organizations.
- LFCL provided case management services by assessing, arranging and evaluating supportive efforts to meet the needs of over 15 families in the area of health and immigration referrals, cash assistance, economically self-sufficiency.
- LFCL partnered with 12 local Latino-based nonprofit organizations and established community-supporting alliances with an additional 87 organizations while following strategic models from a dozens of environmental friendly organizations at the regional and national level.
- LFCL provided one national scholarship for education and training in partnership with the Louisiana Association of Cooperatives resulting in one emerging urban farmer successfully “graduated” from the incubation forming his own micro-farm.
- LFCL hosted the “Green Jobs Now” National Day of Action at O.C. Haley Community Garden. The first national event focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation's history.
